Keeping up with maintenance

7/23/20231 min read

Everyone knows that running a small business is the hardest work – being your own boss and maintaining good habits while fighting the bad ones.

One of those good habits is the maintenance of your equipment, especially computer systems. We all use computers now, whether it's from a mobile smartphone, tablet, or PC.

The amount of time it takes to keep these systems in top working order shouldn't be underestimated. At RoRo's, we have found that scheduling backups and maintenance at regular intervals is the easiest way to ensure that customers don't have to wait longer than necessary for any orders placed.

We've all been there – you take that last-minute order that's needed in a rush, and suddenly your computer stops working, your printer jams, or sometimes the in-laws stay 3 hours longer than the normal visit.

In a previous life, I worked in IT support for far too many years, so we are normally on the ball with maintenance. But everyone's human.

I would advise everyone who runs a small business to make time for this. We run our OS, antivirus, printer, and network checks and updates at least one Sunday morning a month. This gives us the time to fix any problems or even test and introduce new equipment.

If you don't have an "IT person" at home, don't worry about it. It's not very hard.

1. Keep the PC/tablet or smartphone operating system up to date.

2. Run a test page on the printers to look for inconsistencies.

3. If you're not sure and you think something is wrong, reach out for help; guaranteed someone has run into that problem before and knows just how to fix it.

OK, that's my updates finished, and it's time to wrap up this blog.
